Show 123 – Mothering: A tale of deep love and sacrifice

How do you celebrate all mothers, everywhere on Mother’s Day?

A Mother’s love means a lifetime of devotion, acts of love, and service while a woman balances her own needs to reduce her own moments of burnout.

On this Mother’s Day, have you wondered what it takes to raise a child with special needs?

Our guest today not only did that but also did so in the shadows of NBA Championships. Today’s show is a tale of deep love and sacrifice.

Keva Horry of Houston, Texas, is an author, speaker, a powerful voice as a special-needs-community advocate and former wife of seven-time NBA champion Robert Horry. Her memoir, Glamorous Sacrifice: Life…in the Shadow of Championships, was released in February this year. She freely talks about her life of triumphs and trials and how faith anchored her.

She tells of her warp-speed transition from a naïve aspiring news anchor living in a sorority house, the unexpectedly pregnant but happy wife-to-be to Robert Horry. From there, Keva wrote about her nineteen year relationship – including her twelve year marriage – and unwavering devotion to their daughter Ashlyn and their son Camron.

Ashlyn lived 17 years with a rare chromosomal abnormality that meant a life with severe respiratory issues, seizures, feeding tubes, multiple surgeries, delayed motor skills, severe physical and cognitive disabilities and a lifetime of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. In her miraculous life, Ashlyn walked, talked, went to school, was an adoring big sister and the belle of her “Sweet Sixteen” ball. She did it all while fighting for her life every day of her life. She did it while making a mockery of what medicine calls “limits.” Most importantly, she bonded with those who loved her most.

Keva honestly shares her thoughts about caregiver burnout; managing feeding, cleaning, and travelling schedules; mommy guilt; disappointment and devastation; reality checks and adapting to the things we cannot change; and perhaps the hardest of all…accepting help.

  1. Howdy would you mind letting me know which web host you’re
working with? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different web browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker then most.

Can you suggest a good hosting provider at a honest price?
    Cheers, I appreciate it!
