Show 122 – Backpack Free Friday: how personal care is an essential area of life skills for our kids and ourselves

How heavy is your kid’s backpack? Is it more than 10% of their body weight?!!

Before our guest Sherlyn Pang Luedtke introduced this topic to me, I had never heard of Backpack Free Friday before. Imagine my delight when I found out that “The Back Pack Free Friday Campaign” is coordinated by Parenting 2.0, an international consciousness movement that aims to “raise humanity” and children’s Life Skills. Parenting 2.0 on LinkedIn is the top ranked parenting group gathering more than 2900 members in over sixty countries.

Parenting 2.0 says on their website, “Students do not learn or socialize well with others when they are tired, dehydrated and hungry – add to this a pack of heavy books on their backs. Back Pack Free Friday draws awareness to the importance of children’s foundational care in their daily lives.”

Our guest Sherlyn Pang Luedtke is a Success Coach and the Founder of Present Parent Training. In her book, The Mommy Advantage: How Having Kids Can Make You Happier, Healthier, and Wealthier, she teaches parents how to use personal development techniques to alchemize the challenges of parenthood into joy, ease, fulfillment, and abundance. She is a devoted wife and mother of two, a successful entrepreneur, dynamic parent educator, and insightful coach. Today, she joins me on Family Matters to talk about Backpack Free Friday in support of our children’s health and wellbeing.

We had an awesome show talking about developing habits of personal care, communicating and problem solving with schools and teachers, considering everyone’s needs, and empowering our children to speak up for their needs too. Sherlyn shared a bit about the life skills report card.

Aired live: Sunday, April 28th, 2013 0800-0900 Eastern Standard Time on CFRU 93.3 FM, Guelph, Ontario, Canada
